The difference between social media and traditional media is fairly clear.
Things like newspapers and magazines are traditional media, they follow a strict guideline for professional writing. These authors and writers have to have sources, grammar, a certain writing format and sometimes a non-biased opinion depending on the purpose of their written piece.
Social media is completely informal, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and all these new networking sites allow the writer to do whatever they so desire. They have complete freedom, they can write about anything and anyone. A complete biased opinion if they wanted to, it's all up to them. Censorship is not limited here.
People gossip about everything so blogging, tweeting, texting and writing is just like that. People are influenced based on the trend or interest. This morning I heard on the radio about how people can review beauty products on YouTube and they make hundreds of thousands of dollars a couple of months. Some of them are not even out of high school and yet they make all that money. It is all thanks to social media, how people are connected and linked to each other based on common interests. There are so many viewers on watching one short review, it is like an advertisement.
This type of media is fantastic for the "distribution revolution." With social media news and information get out quicker and viewed more. An article, "The Distribution", by Bret Schulte explains "all this focus on Facebook friends and Twitter followers and sowing stories and links across the Web is dramatically altering a side business that the newsroom never much thought about." This shows that regular people can get information out so quickly that it can replace the news companies.
Now that major companies see how much social media can be a big asset, they create online sites receiving new viewers from Twitter, Facebook and other places with fan pages or such. Those people make comments and their friends see it allowing the article to be publicized more.
Traditional media is a thing of the past, social media is taking over the world in a new and faster way. 10 years from now there will be bigger and better things and sites like Facebook and Twitter will be out of date.
